This past Saturday I attended the annual Steppenwolf gala in Chicago. I was advised the attire was urban chic. Now I thought to myself, ‘what in the world is urban chic?.’
Like any normal person I googled urban chic and the images I saw were all over the place. So I decided, what the heck I’ll keep it simple. I’ll create a classic chic look with a pop of color. That should do the trick.
I found a fuchsia off-the-shoulder Christian Siriano dress from my fave place to find ‘one-time use’ high end dresses, Rent the Runway (RTR). Oh how I love #RTR. Long gone are my days of spending $400+ bucks for a dress I’m only going to wear once. Been there. Done that. Not interested.
Well, as luck would have it, the dress wasn’t available. For the first time I mean that in a good way. It was one of those rare moments in life where what you think you want is no where near as good as what you’re going to end up with. Let the church say ‘Amen’ for those moments. What I ended up with was a white dress that gave Nubian Goddess vibes. Yalllllllllll. It was love at first sight. I fell in love with a dress. Yes, I did. A dress I almost didn’t see. I was actually about to leave Rent the Runway’s Chicago storefront when I spotted the dress. Low and behold it was the last one and it was a size 8 (I haven’t worn an 8 since 2015/2016). Good thing I tried it on anyway. I was not going to be defeated that day and what do you know. It fit like a glove. I guess those sweaty cross fit (high intensity work outs) sessions at Fit Results in the south loop of Chicago are paying off. I mean I did lose 17 pounds so far (15 more to go – woohoo).
The dress was a win. It was simple, elegant, and chic. Within a matter of minutes I went from being unsure about what to wear, to being certain about what the entire look for the night would be. I would keep my hair pulled back like it was the day I tried the dress on.
I would wear gold jewelry, especially the earrings I was wearing that day (they look like safety pins). I knew I wanted to wear gold heels as well. The question is would I find a pair. You all know how hard it is to find shoes in a size 11 and above, especially when you want a specific style or color. To my second surprise I found a pair online the very next day. They were fabulous, available in an 11 and 12, and they were inexpensive. In DJ Khalid’s voice, ‘All I do is win, win, win, no matter what.’ lol
Shoe Details:
Co. – Shoe Dazzle
Price – $62.95
Name (link) – Zahara Embellished Stiletto Heel (4.25″ heel)
Fit – True to size. I wear a size 11. Ordered a 12 b/c the last two pair I ordered ran a little small and there’s nothing worse than your big toe hanging over the front of your shoes. Not cute at all. I digress. The Zahara heel is a true size 12 and were a bit too big for me. I wore them anyway. No time to return and wait for the 11’s I needed.
The final look:
The ‘Driggs Dress’ by Likely fits true to size and comes in multiple colors including:

Carolina Blue

This dress is also available at Neiman Marcus and costs $178.

My bday is coming up… and I think he might propose. Your whole look currently under duplication. I am, though, going for a cheaper version of the dress. You looked fabulous!!!

Hi, Bre.
Happy birthday in advance!!! I hope you get everything you want (including that ring woohoo) and more. I’m so happy you like the look. You can totally rent the same dress from Rent the Runway for less money than the price of the dress. Check them out. You can also get the shoes for something like $39.99 if you become a VIP member. Best of luck and please share pics of your final look. I would love to see how everything turns out.
