Tie’g Up Loose Ends – Tie’s for TALL men

August 11, 2014

So you’re six-foot something (6′?”) or seven feet tall and your tie doesn’t quite sit where it should.

I met a gentlemen who is 6’6″ this weekend. After telling him about the TALL District blog his first question was ‘where can I find ties that are long enough’. This post is for you Mr.MT and all of the TALL guys in search of longer ties.

Here are a few tips for you.

1. The tip of your tie should sit just below the start of your belt as your standing, yet no further than the center of your belt.

Not in the middle of your chest, not below your belt, not an inch or two above the belt. The only tie that should sit close to your neck is a bow tie. Capeesh!

2. XL and XXL ties are a TALL man’s best friend. A list of where XL ties can be found are at the end of this post.

– The XL and XXL tie is between 61″-67″ inches long versus the traditional 57″-59″ inch tie.

3. Let’s talk width. Simply put, it’s about tie proportion to body size and the lapel of your suit, style and personal preference. In general, when trying to achieve a more polished, professional appearance a tie that is 2 3/4″  or 3″ inches in width is preferred. Unless you’re wearing a Slim fit suit with a slim lapel.

– Skinny ties are for men who are, well, skinny and/or of smaller to medium build. Don’t kill the messenger. They look best with European style suits and are typically 2″ to 2.5″ inches wide.

– No matter how large you are please stay away from ties that are too wide. It’s like the elephant in the room. People will do everything in their power not to stare in horror at the width of your tie. It’s just not ‘bueno’ no matter what size you are. A 3″ to 3.5″ inch tie is as wide as I recommend.

This 8″ inch tie is not what you want. lol.
