There’s a new Tallista in town: TALL Barbie

January 28, 2016

Mattel released a new line of Barbies today and I’m thrilled about it. There are 3 new body types for the 2016 Fashionistas Barbie doll collection and tall is one of them. A selection of tall, petite and curvy Barbie dolls are now available via Barbie.com. The TALL dolls, just like the curvy and petite dolls, come in a variety of colors, fashion styles, and ethnic backgrounds for just $9.99 or $19.99.

Growing up tall can be socially awkward and hard for a young girl. It is literally hard to fit in when your head sticks out above the crowd. Couple that with images of femininity that are associated with skinny, soft-spoken, gentle, and short/average height women. Images and terms that are not typically associated with a tall female. A tall female who isn’t ‘model skinny’ is often associated with being more masculine, aggressive and is expected to be athletic because well whats the use of being tall if you can’t entertain the world with your athletic prowess, right? Wrong. Nonetheless, it is an  assumption that impacts the way talls are approached. Tall women and men are often met with glaring looks and hear comments like ‘wow you’re tall’ as if we are unaware and are asked the infamous question ‘do you play basketball.’ #adayinthelife

The TALL Barbie doll is great for young tall girls. They now have a doll they can associate with during their formative younger years where they are noticeably taller than their peers. Most young girls reach their peak height by the age of 15/16, while boys experience their growth spurt years later (18-21).  The girls are essentially taller than the boys for a long period of time even during those pesky pre-teen and early teenage years. Having a doll that is like them is encouraging and sends an unspoken message that their height is beautiful and acceptable. It also sends the message that they are not alone as there are other tall girls in the world. A sense of normalcy is key for Tall girls. Way to go Mattel. #thedollevolves is right. Now we need a Tall & Curvy doll, please and thanks!

I love what you said about growing up tall. I was a tall girl and it definitely was awkward. 🙂

I hope you don’t mind that I quoted you on my web site.
