The Mommy Affect: Lori & Gayl

May 6, 2016

Introduction:
Allow me to introduce #Tallistas Lori (6’2”) and her mom Gayl (5’9”) from Chicago and Washington, respectively.

Lori and I met through my brilliant and always fashionably fab mentor, Verett. If you’re in Verett’s circle you’ve got style and that definitely rings true for Lori.

The Mommy Affect Description:
Each day of this week I will share one to two stories leading up to Mother’s Day. The purpose for TALL District’s Mommy Affect Series is to honor moms who make a difference in our tall lives. It also provides an opportunity to shed light on the ‘tall’ impact that mothers and mother figures of all heights (short, tall, average) have on their tall daughters ‘height experience’ and confidence.

Mommy Affect: Daughter’s Perspective (Lori)

Moms Impact
My mother had a positive impact on my height confidence.

Activities to Create Normalcy
My mom enrolled me in sports and dance class. She was open to anything I wanted to do.  At age 11 I even did gymnastics.

Takes a village
My grandmother and my friends were all very positive about my height.

Interaction with Tallistas
My mother instilled in me, to all people, that it’s what is inside that matters the most.

Recommendations from one Tallista to another
Tell them they are beautiful!! Tall is beautiful.

Thank you for not treating me different but loving me for being tall and unique.

Height Awareness
I knew at birth. She was a long and big baby. She had long fingers, toe, legs and arms. A beautiful baby.

Raising a Tall Daughter
The difficultly with raising Lori was in finding clothing and shoes appropriate for her age. It was a challenge to keep her looking young because she didn’t fit into teen clothes so she wore adult women and mens clothing. In shoes she was a size 12 by 15 years old. It was almost impossible to find dress shoes or shoes without a heel that I felt was appropriate for her age.

Overcoming Tall Chalenges
I didn’t have any different challenges in raising a tall girl, other than finding her clothing and shoes.

Tall Resources
Back in the 70’s/80’s there were no resources for tall girls.

Advice From One Mother to Another
I would let her know that being tall is beautiful and that she is very fortunate to be tall!! That is what adds to her being special in life. Give positive compliments.

Thank you so much, Lori and Mrs. Gayl for sharing your height experience with us.
