Necessity is truly the mother of all inventions.
Last month my ‘need’ to put a look together at the last minute for a holiday party resulted in a style remix I think you’ll like.
What would you do with a dress, skirt, wide belt, and faux sheep wool vest? Probably not put them together, right? Well, I tried it and the outcome was a pleasant surprise.
Now my model/assistant ‘Lola’ does not have any curves and has broad shoulders but her ‘pose’ game is strong.
I am going to walk you through how I put together a retro look with one of my fave pencil skirts by luxury brand Model Atelier, vintage dress, wide belt and H&M faux sheeps wool vest.
- I decided to wear the vintage dress backwards (Kris Krossed it). Why?
a) I wanted back interest
b) I wanted a deep neck line. A neckline I created with a little bit of needle and thread. The placement of the zipper is key. The zipper of this dress is in the back of the dress and goes down the center of it. I left the zipper opened and sewed the corners down to get the v-neckline I desired.
The back of the dress is now the front of the dress - Added the second layer; the Model Atelier Zoey pencil skirt. The empty space caused by the split is filled with the material of the vintage dress. As a result, the dress looks like a separate skirt and top.
Note: Both the dress and skirt had a split. As a result, the leg cross ‘sex appeal’ was a hit. - I added the belt to define the waist. I also added the belt to hold the skirt and dress in place. I turned the belt around for ‘back-interest.’ The belt and button on the blouse give the back a bit of pizzazz.
4. It’s Chicago so another layer was necessary. This is where the faux sheep wool vest and thread came in handy. The vest was a bit wide so I sewed both sides to give the illusion of a smaller waist.
5. Add a pop of color. I added color by wearing my candy apple Stuart Weitzman pumps and lip color.
6. Bonus – I decided to go full retro with my ‘Manhattan’ wig and big gold earrings. I kept the accessories simple with gold bracelets and a ring.
7. The final look
Tips:
– Shop your closet. It’s cheaper after all.
– Take the risk, try it, mix it, put it together. If it doesn’t work out that’s ok.
– It is ok to mix patterns.
– Layer – Layers can add visual depth and eye appeal
– Don’t be afraid of a pop of color. A red pump and red lip will do the trick almost every time (but you should know what shade of red works best for your skin tone).

Love the creativity! And totally agree with shopping your closet. I do that all the time. I’m also trying to mix patterns more. I don’t always love the looks I put together during my dress up sessions but it’s still fun to experiment and sometimes I surprise myself with what I put together.

Thanks, Beth. Shopping your closet can truly be a fun adventure. Patterns are tricky but when you get them right they re definitely rewarding. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Tallista.
