Shpala Creates a Classic: The ‘Little Black Dress’ for Tall Women

January 30, 2018

The Little Black Book of Style‘ by Nina Garcia is one my favorite books. It’s easily identifiable on one of the shelves of my little library given its bent edges and the sticky notes peaking out from its pages.

In this book Nina Garcia provides timeless advice on how to look your best while providing a list of staple wardrobe pieces every woman should own.

“The bones of your wardrobe are those essential staples that go with almost anything, never go out of style, and are enduringly chic.” – The Little Black Book of Style, Nina Garcia (2007)

The little black dress (LBD) is at the top of Nina’s wardrobe staples list for good reason. You can literally wear a LBD dress to almost any occasion (depending on the cut of the dress of course). Scroll to the end of this post for the full list and to get the 20% off code. Now, as a lady of tall stature you may not easily find a LBD that fits. That’s where TALL District (TD) comes in handy. When we find it, we share it with the TALL District community. Don’t skip a tall beat. Make sure you subscribe to the TALL District blog in order to get the latest information for the tall community.

Today I am reviewing two LBD dresses from the Shpala, pronounced / Shpə’lə/, capsule collection. I first learned of the brand and met Inna, the fabulous founder of Shpala during a pop-up shop curated by TALL District in NYC, pictured below.

Shpala
is a tailored, quality clothing line created for tall women by a tall woman. Shpala’s capsule collection includes 6 black dresses, two of which are my absolute fave. Every tall woman should own at least one of the classic dresses from the Shpala collection, if not both. The 3/4 sleeve ‘Work Dress‘ for spring/summer, and the full length ‘Basic Dress‘ sleeve for fall/winter. Pictured below.

Work Dress (Black, 3/4 Sleeve): $185

Basic Dress (Black, Long Sleeve): $195

Want to try it before you buy? You’re in luck. Scpala’s showroom is located in NYC. Schedule a fitting to try on the dress at the Shpala showroom by clicking here.

Measurements
Basic Dress – 39 1/8″, 37 1/8″
Work – 39.5″, 37.5″
Universal – 37 3/4″, 35″

Sizing:
Comments based on my personal experience after trying the referenced clothing articles on.

The ‘Basic’ and ‘Evening’ dress from the 6 dress capsule collection are true to size. I wear a size 10 and am pictured above wearing the Basic dress in a large. The ‘Work’ dress is forgiving. I suggest considering ordering a size smaller if you want it to lay nicely on your curves.

Note: I’m 5’11”. In my opinion, the dresses pictured are best suited for women who are 6’2″ or shorter.

Wardrobe Staples by Nina Garcia include:

  1. Little Black Dress – Most classic of them all, first on Garcia’s list, and pictured in this post
  2. Mens White Shirt  or a well fitted one from brands like Long Tall Sally
  3. Cashmere Cardigan or Turtleneck
  4. Trench Coat – Keep it classic (Banana Republic has trench coats that are often available in Tall)
  5. Denim
  6. Watch
  7. High Heel Pump – Black is the way to go
  8. Diamonds – They are a girls best friend (know that they do not need to be real diamonds)
  9. Ballet Flats – These are so necessary, especially if you’re on the go and need something to change into quickly. Train riders and plane takers will understand the importance of this one. This is why I’m in love with my new patent leather loafers.
