Afternoon Tea Style

‘What should I wear to an afternoon tea party’ is a surprisingly popular question. I recently attended an afternoon tea party for the private viewing of luxury brand Model Atelier’s Spring look book. While getting ready I received a text from a good friend, one of my personal guests for the event, asking what she should wear. I suggested she dress nicely and let her know that a hat would not be necessary.

While there is no absolute there are a few things to consider when it comes to selecting your outfit for a tea party.  First question, what time of the day is the tea scheduled (morning, afternoon, evening). Is there a theme? Where is the tea taking place? Who invited you? Is it indoor or outdoor? Once you have these answers you can begin preparation.

What to wear

TALLISTAS
– A dress (casual to classy depending on venue, florals and colors are fun and acceptable)
– Blazer/Cardigan (some dresses may look great without one)
– Heels (pumps, open toe, etc). No sneakers.
– Skirt (pencil, a-line, etc.)
– Pant (trouser but no jeans)
– Costume Jewelry (statement pieces)
– Hat (optional – depends on event. theme/invitation may indicate if hats will be worn)

Mr. TALLS
– Suits (casual)
– Blazer/Sweater
– Trousers (slacks, no jeans)
– No tie unless its a formal tea but Pocket Squares make a great personal style statement. Try Tie Bar for a good selection of patterns and colors. The Tie Bar also has extra long ties.
– Shirt (button up, polos or v-necks under a blazer like Xavier from Chicago pictured below)
